During the first half of the 1950s, Norwegian figure skater Bjørg Skjælaaen won five consecutive pairs titles at the national championships. Skjælaaen won her first title in 1951 with partner Reidar Børjeson before defending their title the following year. In 1952 the pair represented Norway at their home Olympics in Oslo where they finished 13th. From 1953 to 1955 Skjælaaen partnered with Johannes Thorsen, winning three Norwegian pairs titles and gold at the Nordic Championships in 1955. In 1954 they also finished 10th at the World Championships in Oslo.
