Biography

Shareef Abdur-Rahim was a power forward who helped the USA win a gold medal in basketball at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His other international exposure was in winning a gold medal at the 1994 FIBA Americas U-18 Championship. Abdur-Rahim played in college at U Cal Berkeley, leaving after one year for the NBA, where he was chosen in the first round of the NBA Draft as the third overall pick by the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Abdur-Rahim played for the Grizzlies from 1996-2001, making the NBA All-Rookie first team in 1997. He played for 12 years in the NBA, with the Atlanta Hawks from 2001-04, the Portland Trail Blazers from 2004-05, and the Sacramento Kings from 2005-08. He was named an NBA All-Star in 2002. For his NBA career he averaged 18.1 ppg, 7.5 rebounds/game, and 2.5 assists/game.

Abdur-Rahim later had a brief coaching career, serving as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings from 2008-10, but then became a basketball executive. He became assistant general manager of the Kings in 2010, and then in 2013 was named general manager of the Reno Bighorns in the NBA G League. He was promoted to associate vice-president of basketball operations in the NBA and in 2018 became the President of the NBA G League.

While serving as an executive Abdur-Rahim returned to U Cal Berkeley and earned a sociology degree, graduating in 2018. He then received an MBA from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business in 2016.
