Omrane Sadok began taking boxing seriously at the age of 18 and, within a few years, was the top welterweight amateur in Tunisia. He was junior national champion in 1956, then senior champion every year thereafter through 1960. After winning a gold medal at the 1959 Mediterranean Games, his next stop was the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he defeated Tomislav Kelava of Yugoslavia, before being bested by Bulgaria’s Shishman Mitsev. He turned professional at the end of the year and amassed a record of 18-5-2 by the end of 1964, but never contested a major title. He then retired and, after having lived in Paris, returned to Tunis to run a restaurant and café.
