Biography

István Hircsák began his sports career as a footballer in secondary school, but he switched to field hockey at age 14, as a goalkeeper, first for the school team and then with MAC. As an ice hockey player he played his first games in 1930, in the colors of Ferencváros.

In 1935, he was invited to the European All-Stars Ice Hockey Team for a match against Canada. He took part in the 1936 Garmisch Winter Olympics under the name of Csák, as well as in the Berlin Olympics as a field hockey player. In 1935 and 1937, he was a member of the Hungarian ice hockey team that won the World University Championship. Between 1933 and 1939, he participated in every ice hockey World Championship.

After the Olympics Csák returned to FTC for a short time. He played for BKE again from 1938-46 when the team moved to MTK. In all, Csák won 11 national titles and earned 61 caps. Between 1932-48 he played 10 games as a member of the the Hungarian field hockey team.

After World War II, Csák played a significant role in the repair of the bombed-out Budapest ice rink, and later in hockey management. After the dissolution of the MTK ice hockey division, he joined the BP Postás team, but he finally finished his career with Újpest Dózsa. In 1958, he defected while on a foreign tour.

Csák first moved to Australia, where he coached the Budapest SC football team in Sydney, then moved to England, where he changed his name to Hilton. His son, Steve Hilton, worked as a chief adviser to British Prime Minister David Cameron in the early 2010s.
