A native of upstate New York, John Ehrensbeck grew up skiing near Old Forge, New York. He later skied for the US Ski team in Alpine in 1961 and in 1963 was named to the Nordic team. After competing in the 1968 Olympic biathlon events he returned to his home where has been a ski instructor and ski tuner at McCauley Mountain Ski Center in Old Forge. He has also been a soccer and golf coach at the local high school.
