Biography

Uruguayan boxer Mario Benítez fought as a light-middleweight during the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Benítez won his first bout at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics with victory against Eugenio Boches of Guatemala before losing to the American Johnny Baldwin in the quarter-finals. Benítez turned professional in 1970, winning on his début in Montevideo, but losing a bout for the Uruguayan super welterweight title later the same year. He won his final two fights as a professional, before retiring in 1974. In 1985 Benítez was mentioned in the song Brindis por Pierrot (“Toast to Pierrot”) written by musician Jaime Roos, which became a hit in Uruguay.
