Johannson was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the seventh round of the 1982 NHL entry draft, but never played a minute in the NHL. After college graduation he played in Europe with Landsberg EV, before joining the US National Team for the 1987-88 Winter Olympic season. He later became a coach, coaching and serving as general manager of the Twin City Vulcans in the US Hockey League in the late 1990s, before moving on to become an executive with USA Hockey in 2000. In 2017-18 he had the high-profile role of being chosen to select and compile a USA hockey team for PyeongChang, after NHL players were declared ineligible to compete at the Winter Olympics.
