Samuel Stewart attended Washburn College where he played football. He served with the 7th Armored Division in France during World War I and in 1920 was in the 79th Field Artillery of the US Army. He was released from the military in June 1927, after reaching the rank of captain. After retiring from the military Stewart served as manager of the Oahu Ralway. Stewart was cremated with his ashes scattered at sea, but not until 27 years after his death.
