Biography

East German biathlete Herbert Kirchner from Oberhof competed at the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics, finishing 13th in the only event in that era, the 20 km. As Kirchner started with jersey #1 he was the first ever biathlete in the history of Olympic Winter Games. He was one of the pioneers of biathlon in Thuringia and later turned to coaching.
