Biography

Jacques Fauré was well-known in aviation circles as an avid balloonist and, in 1900, he founded the French Aero Club. That same year, he participated in 19 ballooning events at the 1900 Summer Olympics and won one of the closing landing to target combined events, as well as its component intermediate and final stop parts. He gained more attention in 1905 after crossing the English Channel from London to Paris in a balloon at night with aviator Hubert Latham. Following an international ballooning event in St. Louis is November 1910, Fauré travelled to Quebec to hunt moose and fell ill with typhoid fever. While it was not believed to be serious at first, his condition worsened rapidly and he died on December 2. His uncle, Felix, served as President of France from 1895 through 1899.
