Biography

The son of a London printer, George Hetley was born in England but spent much of his early life in France, and earned himself a reputation as a fine tennis player and golfer. In 1895 he took part in the Paris Tennis Club’s covered course event that was billed as the first ever Open Singles Covered Championship of France, when Hetley and R. B. Hough were the only Englishmen in the competition. Hetley later joined the committee of the Paris club.

As a golfer, Hetley played for the Dieppe Golf Club and finished 11th in the handicap singles event at the 1900 Paris Olympics with a net score of 84 off a handicap of 14. He was recruited by the fledgling Paris Club that year and won their Grand Prix du Golf. He retained it in 1901, when it was held over the club’s new links at La Boulie. Hetley later played in Nice, and then for Le Touquet, where he won the 1908 Windeler Cup over his home course at the Autumn Open meeting. He also won the foursomes with fellow Le Touquier member, H. Frapin.
