Biography

Mohamed Mzali studied in Tunis and Paris and was Vice-President of the Destouranian Students Federation while in Paris. Returning to Tunisia he worked as a teacher and magazine publisher before entering politics. He was a Member of Parliament until 1959, gaining political popularity through his position as president of the Tunisian Writers Union, and then served the government in various ministerial posts (defense, health, education). In April 1980 he was appointed Tunisian Prime Minister by President Habib Bourguiba, and served in that role until July 1986 when government mandated price increases caused widespread rioting and he was forced to resign and flee the country, settling in exile in Paris. He was allowed to return to Tunisia in 2002, but eventually died in Paris.

Mzali was co-opted onto the IOC in October 1965 and served until his death in 2010. He was an Executive Board Member from 1973-80, and served successively as 3rd, 2nd, and then 1st Vice-President in 1979-80. He also served on several commissions: Press and Public Relations (1967-72), Information and Cultural (1973-74), Press (1974-80), Tripartite (1977-80), and Culture and Olympic Education (2002-10), and he was President of the International Olympic Academy from 1977-88. Mzali was President of the Tunisian Olympic Committee from 1962-86, the Turkish Football Association (1962-63), the Organizing Committee for the 1967 Mediterranean Games in Tunis, and the International Council for the Mediterranean Games in 1979-87.
