Biography

David Sibandze studied business at the University of Swaziland and the London Institute of Commerce. He later held multiple posts within his nation’s government, including postmaster (1965-69) and senior accountant (1969-72) in the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Department; senior executive officer of the Ministry of Works and Communications from 1972-74; town treasurer of the Manzini Town Council from 1974-87; and he then served as the director of several companies.

Sibandze started out in sports administration as President of the National Soccer League from 1968-70 and then President of the Football Association in 1970-71. He was a founding member and first President of the Swaziland National Olympic Committee in 1972. He also founded and chaired the National Sports Council of Swaziland from 1980-85. He was on the Executive Committee of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa from 1981-85 and on the Executive Council of the Association of National Olympic Committees from 1981-85.

Sibandze was made an IOC Member in 1984 and served on several IOC Commissions: Study and Evaluation Commisstion for the Preparation of the Olympic Games (1985-86), Cultural Commission (1989-95), and Eligibility Commission (1996-99). In 1999, during the Olympic Bribery Scandal, it was revealed that one of his sons, Sibo, had been paid by the 2002 Salt Lake City Organizing Committee while he was studying at the University of Utah. Sibandze was investigated by the IOC for this infraction and voluntarily offered his resignation to the IOC, the only member to graciously to do so.
