During the 1980s Farag El-Emary competed at international taekwondo tournaments representing Egypt. In 1985 El-Emary won gold in the -70 kg event at the World Games in London. Three years later taekwondo made its début at the Olympics, albeit as a demonstration sport, with El-Emary losing his opening bout in the lightweight event to the eventual winner Park Bong-Gwon (KOR). Following his retirement from the sport he had a lengthy career as a coach.
