Biography

Defender Steffi Jones was a member of the German women’s football squads that won the bronze medal at both the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics. Therefore, she was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Jones won 111 international caps and scored nine goals. In 2003, she was a member of the squad that won the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and in 1997, 2001, and 2005 she also won the UEFA European Women’s Championship. In 2019, she was inducted into the German Football Hall of Fame.

At club level, Jones played with SG Praunheim (1986-91, 1992-93, 1994-97), FSV Frankfurt (1991-92, 1997-98), TuS Niederkirchen (1993-94), SC 07 Bad Neuenahr (1998-2000), 1. FFC Frankfurt (2000-02, 2003-07), and Washington Freedom in the US (2002-03). She helped FSV Frankfurt win the German Championship in 1998, and also won it with 1. FFC Frankfurt in 2001-03, 2005, and 2007. Jones also won the US Championships in 2003 with Washington, and in 2002 and 2006 won the UEFA Women’s Cup with 1. FFC Frankfurt.

Jones, who also held US citizenship, was a trained merchant in wholesale and foreign trade. She was later employed by the German Football Association in several positions, including president of the Organizing Committee of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany, and Director for Women’s, Girl’s and School Football in Germany. From 2016-18 Jones also became chief national coach of the Women’s team. She also became FIFA Governor for Women’s Football.

Jones lived openly gay and married her partner in 2013. She engaged herself in the campaign “Respect! No Space for Racism”. Occasionally, she participated in some rolls on German TV in the criminal and entertainment genres.
