Biography

Jack Lufkin competed in cross-country skiing at Fort Lewis College in Colorado, where he majored in history and captained the ski team. Lufkin competed at the 1968 Winter Olympics and the 1968 World Winter University Games, finishing 55th at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics over 30 km. In 1969 he was selected as the Outstanding Scholar-Athlete of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Lufkin later entered the ski industry with California Outward Bound, but in 1972 he helped develop the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation in New Hampshire becoming Executive Director in 1973. With friends Tommy Upham and Avery Caldwell, he created the Nordic Ski Instructors Association, serving as the head certification examiner of the organization for several years.

From 1976-78 Lufkin developed the Carrabassett Valley Recreation Center, later the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center in Maine. He then became Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Exel Marketing, a large cross-country distribution company in North America, a position he held until 1994. In 2005 he became the sales director at the Attitash Grand Summit in Bartlett, New Hampshire, finally retiring in 2017. Lufkin was inducted into the Maine Ski Hall of Fame in 2006.
