Karl Stemolak

Austrian sculptor Karl Stemolak received an Honorable Mention at the 1936 Art Competitions in Berlin for his work Discus Thrower When Throwing Out in the category Sculpturing, Statues. The bronze figures Shot-putter at rest and Runner at the start were shown in 1944 at the last Great German Art Exhibition. Images could not be obtained. He studied in Vienna (Wien) at the Academy of Fine Arts. After receiving the Prix de Rome in 1903, he made study trips to Italy. He mainly produced male and female figures, standing alone and showing initially the quietness and beauty of ancient sculptures.

Since 1914 Stemolak was president of the Hagenbund. He was one of the few sculptors who stood constantly in dialogue with his colleagues and their styles were also recovered in his own works. He was the president of the “Vienna Secession” from 1946-47 and organized the first exhibition after World War II. Subsequently, he was President of the Professional Association of Austrian Artists until his death.
