Biography

Paul Daxhelet initially exhibited as a graphic artist, but was also talented with oil paints and drawings. He initially studied in Liège, then later in Paris at the Academie des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian. He was later appointed professor in Liège. Daxhalet painted figurative and expressionistic works, but was also a big sports fan, and was a boxer himself. He traveled several times to Africa but also to India, the Middle East, South America, and Polynesia. Influenced by these experiences, he turned to Oriental scenes and surrealism in the 1960s.

The works submitted in 1936 cannot be precisely identified, as Daxhelet created numerous works showing boxing and wrestling scenes using different techniques. The corresponding techniques are not listed in the catalogue, nor are the times of origin known for most of these works. These were mainly charcoal drawings and watercolors, but also including ink drawings and an oil painting. According to the catalogue, the works entered in 1948 were paintings. An oil painting of 60 x 79 cm titled “Fotbol” was created as early as 1925, but there seems to be more than one picture with this subject that could be considered.
