Alfred Thomson’s gold medal in painting marked the first (and last) time Great Britain won an Olympic gold medal in art. The deaf painter had worked as an official war artist during World War II, and earned his gold medal with a boxing scene titled London Amateur Championships. Silver medalist Giovanni Stradone was a noted Italian expressionist, but he sent in several rather cubist works depicting track cycling, and Fausto Coppi in particular. Bronze was awarded to landscape painter Letitia Hamilton. The Irishwoman received her prize for Meath Hunt Point-to-Point Races.
