Biography

Ciaran Clear moved with his family to the small town of Rush near Dublin, where he spent his entire life. He was a man of many talents, playing drums in his own swing band and designing sets for the local dramatic society. After a long illness, he became a full-time painter in the 1950s. Clear was best known for his moonlit seascapes of his hometown of Rush in North County Dublin and in Connemara. He preferred group exhibitions and, in 1963, he was one of the founding members of the Fingal Artists Group, with Maurice MacGonigal being another member. Clear’s painting Ocean Racing - “Aideen” in Fastnet (oil on canvas, 83 x 98 cm) was only mentioned in Irish sources and not included in the catalog of the art exhibition. The 1934-built 42-foot ketch “Aideen” from Dun Laoghaire won her class in the 1947 Fastnet Race. She was designed and owned by Irish yachtsman Arthur William “Billy” Mooney (1890-1972) and was later sold to Canada.
