Biography

Danish impressionist painter Knud Gleerup was best known for his series of landscapes and also worked with sculpturing and woodcuts, especially children’s portraits. Except for his time as a student with the painter Carl Vilhelm Meyer (1870-1938), Gleerup was largely self-taught. He belonged to the Classic Scandinavian Modernists. As a sculptor, he created numerous busts of prominent personalities. In 1942 he published the novel Omkring Hjørnet (Around the Corner). Klar til start (Ready to start), a down-to-earth styled statue of the Danish swimmer Ragnhild Hveger, is reproduced in the catalog of the art exhibition.
