Axel Høeg-Hansen was one of the most productive Danish architects in Aarhus at the beginning of 20th century, and designed about 150 buildings in the city. Høeg-Hansen was a trained bricklayer and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in København (Copenhagen) after graduating from the Technical School. He then went on study trips to Spain and Norway. He owned his own architectural office from 1909 and became director of the National Exhibition in Aarhus with buildings designed by him. His style was functional and neoclassical and shaped the cityscape with more than 150 in the city. In 1918, he designed the Aarhus sports-park consisting of an outdoor stadium for the football club GF Aarhus and a sports hall which was opened two years later by King Christian X. The building re-used the wooden arch design of the train-station, formerly located here. After several renovations and refurbishments, it is still used today by the local soccer and handball teams under the name of Ceres Park & Arena. Høeg-Hansen later designed the Aarhus County hospital.
