Biography

After an abandoned apprenticeship in the hotel business, German painter Carl Reiser studied in London, Paris, and at the Académie Julian, Montreux and Venizia, before he came back to München. He was considered one of the first winter and snow painters. During World War I he served in the German army until 1918. In 1927 Reiser became professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in München. During the Third Reich he was defamed as a friend of Jewish people and in 1938 deposed as president of the Werdenfels Künstlerbund.

In addition to his portraits Reiser was best known for his landscapes and still lifes. As a landscape, portrait, architecture, city and still-life painter, he used all known techniques: watercolor, gouache, tempera and oil. His style was assigned to a nature lyrism originating from Late Impressionism. In 1950 he died of a brain hemorrhage after a motorcycle accident.
