Edmondo Gigante was the son of Italian immigrants who moved to Glasgow ahead of World War I. The family later moved to Belfast before settling in Dublin, where Gigante’s father had his own confectionary business.
Gigante studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in the 1930s. His first known exhibition was at the National College of Art (Dublin) in the “Students’ Exhibition” before his submission, a wood sculpture entitled “Eire Youth”, was seen at the 1948 London Olympics. Also that year, Gigante exhibited for the first time at the Oireachtas Exhibition in Dublin. A member of the Institute of Sculptors, he did not join them until the age of 40 in 1956.
