Biography

Johannes “Jo” Boer was not related to the musician Coenraad Walther Boer, who took part in the art competitions in 1932. Jo lived and worked in Groningen. There he designed especially large residential complexes based on the Amsterdam School style and the New Objectivity. In 1971 he and his wife died together in a traffic accident when he tried to avoid the Groningen City Railway and crashed into the adjacent channel. The “Noorderbad” in Groningen was built in 1933 according to the plans of Jo Boer. The style of the building is influenced by Expressionism and Cubism with the peculiar swimming pool on the 1st floor. In 1996, the pool was closed and was initially used as a library, later by companies. Today it is a protected monument.
