Biography

Herman Van der Kloot Meijburg was an architect who studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts at Rotterdam, where he initially represented his office. From 1910-17 he was a professor of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In the early 1930s, he then moved with his office from Voorburg to The Hague. He mainly restored churches and built new churches, school buildings and private housing complexes. He was a member of The Hague School and published various books on old churches and farm houses.

In 1909 he became a member of the Dutch Royal Archaeological Association, in 1923 he was made a knight of the Order of Oranje-Nassau, and in 1924 became a member of the Royal Society of Sciences of Zeeland. He published several books concerning old churches and old farmhouses.

Van der Kloot Meijburg was an avid skier and oarsman and for many years a member of the Roeivereniging Nautilus. The clubhouse was built in 1924 under the influence of the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, with halls, an office, a terrace overlooking the waters of the Nieuwe Maas and the city of Rotterdam, as well as a boathouse. The complex of rectangular brick areas with horizontal bands with windows has been listed as a historical monument by the City of Rotterdam.
