Biography

South African sculptor and graphic artist Elizabeth Benson was already working in Johannesburg in the 1920s after her marriage. She later taught sculpturing at the Witwatersrand Technical College of Arts and Crafts. She concentrated on portraits of indigenous people of South Africa. The Shangaan is also a South African ethnic group. Benson had already exhibited a bust with a similar title in London in 1920. She later worked again under her maiden name MacAdam.
