Biography

Swiss architect Edmond Virieux studied from 1914-19 at the ETH in Zürich. He became the first head of the Planning Department of the city of Lausanne, where he initiated urban planning for the city with first traffic studies, park layouts, cemetery projects and others. During this time he cooperated, amongst others, with Alphonse Laverrière.Between 1936-60, Edmond worked as the architect of the Kanton of Vaud. During this time, he drafted an innovative law on building regulations. Even after his retirement, he was involved in a number of major restauration projects. In 1955 Virieux published a book about the restauration of Savoyen chateau Chillon near Montreux on Lac Léman. He also held the chair for urbanism at the school of architecture of the University of Lausanne.
