Biography

Gerhard Gyllenhammar was an artist, cartoonist, graphic artist and sculptor. From 1894-1900, he studied in Stockholm at the school of the Artists’ Association and lived in Paris 1901-14. There he produced drawings for the yellow press, signed Gérard. After returning to Sweden he worked for the magazine Nya Nisse. He preferred motifs from the ancient mythology, figurative compositions and port views using a variety of graphic techniques (including woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs). He also designed book illustrations. Gyllenhammar took part in the 1936 Olympic Games at Berlin with his Pole Vaulter. He was married to paintress Ulrika “Gully” Wallin (1878-1952).
