Biography

Swedish painter and graphic artist John Sjösvärd created the official poster for the XVI Olympiadens Ryttartävlingar (XVI Equestrian Olympic Games) in 1956. He studied at the Higher Industrial Arts School in Stockholm, received an art teacher diploma in 1915, and for ten years was teaching penmanship at the Higher School of Art and Design in Stockholm. Sjösvärd painted mainly horses and ancient military motifs, and also edited and illustrated books, as well as producing advertising posters. He also produced pattern drawings for decorative painting, religious art and crafts. In addition, he also produced sculptures and designs for medals and badges. Sjösvärd’s oil painting Jockeys dates from 1934, i.e., from the appropriate period. He painted similar works from the milieu of horse racing until his death.
