Biography

Morgan Dennis was best known for his campaign for the Scottish whiskey producers Black & White, in which his dog motives “Black and White Scotties” played the central role. He primarily painted, illustrated and wrote about dogs. In addition, he painted landscapes and genre scenes in oil.

One of his murals still hangs in the bar of the Sheraton Russell Hotel in New York. Dennis studied at the American School of Design in Boston.

Dennis apparently created several graphic works subtitled Best of Breed in which he portrayed prize-winning dogs of a particular breed. These included ‘Scot’s Home Surprise’ Best of Breed Westminster from 1930. The etching was 22.5 x 17.5 cm in size, one candidate for the entry for the art competitions.
