Biography

American painter William Hays, Jr. followed his father William Jacob Hays, Sr. (1830-75) as a painter of wildlife scenes, especially dogs and horses, also creating landscapes. Hays, Jr. lived mostly in New York and became acquainted with the North American wilderness, on an extended trip in 1860. His favorite subjects were buffaloes, dogs, and horses. Hays studied at the National Academy of Design (NAD) in New York and later at the academies Julian and Colarossi in Paris. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club and associate of the NAD.
