Eleanor Modrakowska was a painter and etcher who painted mainly portraits, landscapes and flower studies. A child of German immigrants, she came to Europe at the age of 9 years, where she immediately developed a love for art and frequently visited museums in Firenze and München. At age 14, she had her first teacher, the Slovenian artist Anton Ažbe (1862-1905). Upon her return to the US, she studied in New York at the Art Students League. Later she lived primarily on Long Island and in Lake Placid. Modrakowska became well-known for bold, vital brushstrokes and her use of brilliant colors. She was a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the Society of American Etchers, and the Chicago Society of Etchers. Her entries in the 1932 Art Competitions could not be identified but were listed in different categories in the catalog: Greek Athlete as a painting and Taking the Curve under prints and drawings.
