Ramón de Zubiaurre

Ramón de Zubiaurre Aguirrezábal and his brother Valentine (1879-1963) were both born deaf, which is considered the reason for their close relation. In 1940 they went to Chile, the homeland of Ramón’s wife, exhibiting in several South American countries and returning only in 1951. From the beginning of his career, the development of Ramón de Zubiaurre is closely linked to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts and cultural life in Madrid. In 1905 he graduated from the Academy of San Fernando like his brother. Later he settled in Madrid, where he rented a studio together with his brother in Madrid.

The painting Los marineros de Ondarroa (Sailors of Ondarroa) is said to have been painted by Ramón de Zubiaurre around 1924 in oil on canvas, sized 90 x 99.5 cm. The painting was on loan from the San Diego Museum for the 1932 art exhibition. There are a number of similar paintings by this painter, so the identity of the work is not completely clear. Ondarroa is a town in the Spanish part of the Basque Country.
