Karl Michl was a rising star in Austria’s athletic scene when he was entered in shot put and discus throw for the 1912 Olympic Games. He did not start, however. In 1913, he secured his first two Austrian Championship titles in discus throw and shot put. One year later, he won another two golds, this time in shot put and javelin throw. In both years, he set national records in the three events: 1913 twice with the discus, 1913 and 1914 three in the shot put, and one with the javelin in 1914. All his records stood well into the 1920s. Michl was killed in action in the first months of World War I.
