Biography

Alexandre Correia Leal was a Portuguese sprinter. Representing CIF throughout his athletic career, he was a national champion in the 100 meters (1914), 200 meters (1914 and 1915), 400 meters (1912 and 1913) and pentathlon (1914 and 1915), among other disciplines. He was part of the first Portuguese team at the Olympic Games, in 1912, but ended up not competing. The Portuguese delegation struggled with the lack of financial means to travel to Stockholm, as the Portuguese Olympic Committee did not grant any subsidies, and Correia Leal became part of the group of four athletes excluded from participating in the Games due to lack of funds.

Later a Civil Engineer with a connection to the army, Correia Leal never stopped being linked to sport, having been president of the national federations of Rowing, Athletics, Shooting and Modern Pentathlon. He would return to the Olympic Games in 1928 as a member of the Executive Committee of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP), in 1952 as head of the Modern Pentathlon team, in 1960 and 1964 as head of mission, and in 1968 as President of the COP.
