In the years in which the 400 metres hurdles event was dominated in Italy by Luigi Facelli, 11-time Italian champion, including consecutive titles from 1924-31, Mario Cavalleri was unfortunate to not win important races or set records, nor earn a cap with the national team.
Domestically Cavalleri came to the fore in September 1922 when, at the National Championship in Milano, he was runner-up in the race won with a national record by Fortunato Braccini (59.4). The following year, on 26 August, he set his personal best (57.8) in Busto Arsizio, finishing second behind Facelli. In the Olympic year 1924, basically his final competitive year, he failed to go under 58 seconds and was only an alternate for Paris.
Personal Best: 400H – 57.8 (1923).
