Biography

Azmi Megahed had a lengthy volleyball career with the Egyptian national team, winning eight African championships and three Arab ones. During this time, he was named African player of the year in 1974 and best Egyptian player in 1976. In that latter year, he attended the Montreal Olympics, where his country lost all four of its matches in the round-robin pool and was eliminated from the tournament. Domestically, he played for Zamalek, one of the most successful African teams of the era. Following his retirement from active competition, he helped his former club earn more titles as a coach and administrator. He also worked as a television presenter for several years. He died in September 2020 of complications arising from COVID-19. His son, Amir Azmi, was a prominent footballer at the national level in Egypt.
