Biography

A golfer and track athlete in high school, left winger Brian Savage had played just one season with the Sudbury Cubs of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League prior to enrolling in Miami University in 1990 and suiting up with their ice hockey team, the Redskins. By the end of his freshman year, however, he had been drafted by the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens, but elected first to complete two more years in Miami and one more beyond that with the Canadian national men’s ice hockey team. He travelled with the squad to the 1994 Winter Olympics, suiting up for eight games, scoring two goals, and taking home a silver medal. Upon his return he made his NHL debut in three games with the Canadiens, and also spent time with the American Hockey League’s Fredericton Canadiens. Beginning in 1994, however, he began skating with Montreal exclusively in a relationship that would last until 2002. He also joined Team Canada at the 1999 World Championships during this time, but came back empty handed.

Following a serious injury in 1999 that left him with cracked vertebrae, Savage began to slow down and he was traded in the middle of the 2001-2002 season to the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes. Within two years he was traded again, this time to the league’s St. Louis Blues, but the 2004-2005 NHL lockout came after only 13 games with the team. He resurfaced after the absence by signing a one-year contract with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers and announced his retirement in 2006. He now spends his time as co-owner of the Central Hockey League’s New Mexico Scorpions and, since 1996, he has held a Charity Golf Classic to raise money for underprivileged children.
