During the late 1920s and early 1930s Harry Smyth was one of the best speed skaters in Canada. Smyth began competing from a young age, winning the New Brunswick titles in the under-12 category (1922) and the under-16 category (1926). In 1926 he was undefeated in all of the competitions he participated in, which saw him win the Canadian and World championships. He won further national titles in 1927 and 1928 and was ultimately being selected to represent Canda at the 1932 Lake Placid Olympics. Initially Smyth was named to compete in four events in Lake Placid but he only took to the ice for the 5,000 metres, where he finished eighth. In 1973 he was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame.
Personal Bests: 500 – 46.7 (1932); 1500 – 2:38.5 (1932); 5000 – 9:15.1 (1932).
