Biography

East German Nordic combined skier Claus Tuchscherer finished fifth at the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics. On the last day of the Games, Tuchscherer and his Austrian girlfriend Anna Steinbauer fled by taxi to Bischofshofen. After negotiations with the Ministry of State Security (Stasi), the couple returned to East Germany and were allowed to leave the country legally.

Both subsequently returned to Austria, and Tuchscherer became part of the Austrian national team until 1982, obtaining several top-10 finishes in international competitions. After his active career, he worked with the Innsbruck social department.
