A lifelong skier, Richard Walpole was at the pinnacle of his cross-country skiing career during the late 1950s and early 1960s, when he won several Australian national titles. Internationally, his greatest moment came when he represented his country in the 15 kilometers event at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics, where he finished 51st out of 54 entrants. A member of the Myrtleford Ski Club, he took up coaching while still active in his career, and later expanded upon this role following his retirement, remaining involved with the sport into his 80s.
