Olaf Winter was a member of the German flatwater kayak fours that won the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Four years later at Sydney, he was fourth in the kayak doubles partnering Andreas Ihle. Winter won one bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships in the kayak doubles with Ihle.
Winter later studied journalism and economics, and was from 2004-10 a commentator for canoe broadcasts at the German TV channel Eurosport. In 2004 he became public relations manager of the German Canoe Association based in Duisburg.
