German Nordic combined Thorsten Schmitt, brother of well-known ski jumper Martin Schmitt, placed sixth with the Nordic combined team at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. The team also won a silver medal at the 2003 World Championships. At the 2006 Torino Olympics, Schmitt was a substitute but did not compete. He retired in 2007 after failing to get selected for that year’s World Championships.
