The individual jumping and dressage took place at the Piazza di Siena at the Villa Borghese Gardens, which were among the largest public parks in Roma. The gardens were started in 1605, when Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V and patron of Bernini, began converting a former vineyard. Team jumping took place on the final day of the Games at the Stadio Olimpico.
Women were first allowed to compete in Olympic jumping in 1956, and all future Olympic jumping events would be open to women. Team and individual events were contested in 1960 but for the first time ever at the Olympics, they were separate events and were not held concurrently. Individual gold went to Italy’s Raimondo d’Inzeo while Germany won the team gold medal. During his riding career, d’Inzeo would compete at eight Olympics and win six medals, but this was his only gold medal.
