Hockey at the 1984 Summer Olympics

Dates 29 July – 11 August 1984
Medal Events 2

The 1984 Olympic hockey tournament took place at Weingart Stadium on the East Los Angeles College campus in Monterey Park, California. The Soviet-led boycott did not disrupt things as badly as the American boycott had in 1980, but there was still some difficulty filling the fields. The Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) chose the 12 men’s teams based on their international ranking, adding the United States as the host nation. The women’s field was based on the results of the 1983 World Cup, with the Netherlands (1st), Canada (2nd), Australia (3rd), West Germany (4th), and New Zealand (7th) joining the United States as the host nation.

The 12 men’s teams were separated into two six-team groups who played a round-robin format to determine the top two teams in each group, who then advanced to the semi-finals. The women played a pure round-robin format with no classification or knock-out matches.

Pakistan won the men’s gold medal while the Netherlands won the women’s tournament, with the West German men and women both taking silver. In the women’s event, the United States and Australia tied for third-place, and decided the bronze medal by a penalty shot shoot-out, with the US winning 10-5.
