Ice Hockey at the 1960 Winter Olympics

Dates 19 – 28 February 1960
Medal Events 1

All matches were held on the artificial ice of the Blyth Memorial Arena, situated next to the speed skating rink. The building was demolished in 1983 after its roof collapsed. Canada had won the 1958 and 1959 World Championship, but the biggest controversy in 1960 concerned the amateur status of some of their players. Rather unusually, this controversy was started, not by any of their opponents, but by the Canadian media! The United States would win the gold medal in a major upset in Squaw Valley. For Canada it would be the end of an era, as their Olympic team had always been from a single club or college team, but by 1964 this would be replaced by a national all-star team, as they realized they needed their best players to compete against the Soviet Union.
