Equestrian Dressage at the 2012 Summer Olympics

Dates 2 – 9 August 2012
Medal Events 2

The equestrian events of the 2012 London Olympics were held in the middle of the city in Greenwich Park. A 23,000 seat temporary arena built in the shadow of the National Maritime Museum hosted the show jumping and dressage.

Team and individual dressage events were held at the 2012 Olympics, but they were essentially conducted simultaneously. Charlotte Dujardin won the individual gold medal, breaking the streak of three consecutive wins by Anky van Grunsven. Dujardin would defend her gold medal in 2016, and in London led Great Britain to the team gold medal, breaking the German / West German streak, which reached back to 1984. The first two days of competition determined the team placements and medals, and served as a qualifier for the third day of individual competition, with 32 riders advancing to Grand Prix Special. The second phase advanced 18 riders to the final day of individual dressage, the Grand Prix Freestyle.

Hiroshi Hoketsu competed in individual dressage for Japan at 71-years-old, becoming the oldest Olympian since Arthur von Pongracz in 1936, also in equestrian dressage. With his appearance in London, Hoketsu became the fifth oldest Olympian of all-time, in any sport.
