Marathon swimming made its second Olympic appearance at the 2012 London Olympics. Men and women each contested one event, held over 10 km in the eastern section of The Serpentine, a 16 hectare (40 acres) recreational lake in Hyde Park, London.
As at Beijing each event was to have had 25 swimmers, although only 24 started in the women’s event. The 24 women’s starters came from 24 different nations, while 23 nations were represented among the men, with Germany and Russia having two starters each. Overall, 32 nations started in marathon swimming at London 2012.
Tunisia’s Oussama Mallouli won the men’s event, adding another gold to his victory in the 2008 1,500 freestyle. He also won a bronze medal in the 1,500 at London.
