Medal Events 2
Venues Odaiba Marine Park, Minato, Tokyo / Asaka Shooting Range, Nerima, Tokyo

Men and women both contested a single marathon swimming event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a 10 km race. Both races were held in the Odaiba Marine Park in the Minato section of Tokyo. As had been true at each Olympics since marathon first made it onto the Olympic Programme at Beijing 2008, 25 starters were planned for each gender, although 26 men started in Tokyo. The six medals were taken by swimmers from six different nations with Germany’s Florian Wellbrock winning the men’s gold medal, and Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha taking the women’s title.

Wellbrock also won a bronze medal in Tokyo in pool swimming over 1,500 metres. The men’s bronze medalist, Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri won a silver medal at Tokyo in the 800 metres and had been the 1,500 metre gold medalist at Rio 2016. He would return at Paris 2024 and compete in marathon swimming, finishing ninth, but would add a bronze and silver medal in pool swimming in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles, respectively.
